The New Englander, New Englander and Yale Review, and the Yale Review, in 131 bound volumes, from 1843 through Summer 1969, missing only one year (1862)
New Haven: Maltby, Wiley, Ginn, Yale, et al. 1892. First edition. Hardcover. Ex-Library set of bound volumes of "The New Englander," which was later called "New Englander and Yale Review," which was later called "The Yale Review," from 1843 - Summer, 1969. The journal, regarded as the oldest literary quarterly in the US, was founded originally in 1819 as The Christian Spectator. In 1843 it changed its name to "The New Englander," and its focus to history and economics. In 1885 it was renamed to "The New Englander and Yale Review." Finally, in 1892, new editor Henry Walcott Farnam changed the name to its current title, "The Yale Review," and decided to focus more on politics and history, and, eventually, literature and poetry. This set contains 131 bound volumes, starting with Volume 1 of "The New Englander" (1843), through Volume 58 of "The Yale Review," (1968-9). This set lacks only one book, Volume 21 of "The New Englander," (1862), but it does have an additional index to the first 19 volumes of "The Yale Review." Library stickers on spines, bookplates on front pastedowns, and stamping (ink and blindstamps) to prelims and title pages. Contents are readable and unmarked. Many of the early volumes have tissue-covered plates. Some of the earliest volumes are in 1/2 leather bindings, but most of their boards are loose. The later volumes are bound in green and black library buckram. "The New Englander" attracted some well known names, but the modern history of the journal, beginning with its appointment of Wilbur Cross as editor in 1911, featured writers such as Thomas Mann, Henry Adams, Virginia Woolf, George Santayana, Robert Frost, José Ortega y Gasset, Eugene O’Neill, Leon Trotsky, H.G. Wells, Thomas Wolfe, John Maynard Keynes, H.L. Mencken, A.E. Housman, Ford Madox Ford, Wallace Stevens, John Berryman, W. H. Auden and Randall Jarrell. 131 volumes. Will require extra postage.
