A Tally of Types: Cut for Machine Composition and Introduced at the University Press, Cambridge

Cambridge: Privately Printed, 1953. Limited ed. 1953, one of 450 copies. First Edition, printed and bound at Christmas by the University Press, Cambridge, for presentation by the printer, Brooke Crutchley, to his friends in printing and publishing. Hardcover, red cloth, gilt title. Near Fine in original linen slipcase. 102 pp. Soft bump tot eh bottom corners; spine cloth sunned just a touch; very faint smudge to the title page. Strong binding; clean contents. Slipcase Fine. Bookplate of the former owner, John Rayner Esq., attached to the front pastedown. This copy also includes two TLSs laid-in, one from bookseller A. Zwemmer of London, the other from James Shand, proprietor of London's Shenval Press. Both letters are addressed to Rayner and regard procurement of this book. Shenval notes that he is lending Rayner his own personal copy, and that he should try Elkin Mathews, Quaritch or Maggs to find his own. There were two well known John Rayners living in London at this time -- a Rabbi and a fighter pilot. To our knowledge the fighter pilot was the only one who took the bar and became a solicitor, leading us to believe that he was the former owner. Another monkey wrench, however, as there was the writer John Rayner Heppenstall who published something on Shand's Shenval Press. But there is no evidence that Heppenstall was a lawyer. A rare title, with mysterious provenance. Item #0085434
