United States Army Training Center / Infantry / Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Company A, Sixth Battalion, Second Brigade (1968)

Hardcover. No date, published 1968. Quarto, blue vinyl with color photographic onlay, ca. 50 pp mainly b/w photographic illustrations. Inscribed by a Vietname veteran from the North Hills of Pittsburgh to his grandfather and with two letters to his grandfather inserted, from March 23 and April 9, 1968. Book is very good. Handwritten letters, totalling 3pp, are poignant and heartbreaking, especially as we know that the person who wrote them suffered severe mental health problems upon his return from Vietnam. Written during basic training to his grandfather, they tell of suffering and fear. "I hope and pray to God every night, that I'll get through basic the first time. I need all the strength and encouragement I can get. It's not easy, going through what I am right now. I'll do the best I can to make you proud of me. I try my best, but I doubt if it's enough. I just hope it is. I get scared about not getting out of basic. The dreadful throught sticks with me every day." Very Good. Item #C000017197
