London: Strahan, Rivington, et al. 1779 - 1784. Hardcover. 5th Edition, volumes 1-8 dated 1779, the Supplement is a first edition and is dated 1784. The tenth, index volume is bound in ca. 1820s half straight grained deep red morocco and marbled boards. The 9 volumes are bound in contemporary tree calf with a gilt insignia on the cover of each volume, with a coronet over a superimposed 'X' and 'S', with spines in a deeper, redder leather with gilt lettering on spine including dozens of families and peers in gilt listed in gilt on spines. VERY GOOD with light rubbing to outer joints, several volumes have some cracking to the inner hinges of the endpapers but all boards are still sturdily attached -- the 3rd volume has had its front board neatly reattached with japanese paper and looks great; the first volume has had neat reinforcement to the front inner hinge with japanese paper. The bindings are all very nice and handsome with outstanding warm tree calf boards and lovely gilt maroon spines. Contents are very good and bright and feature 228 engraved coats of arms. Bookplates inside of Joel Cheney Wells (associated with an optical company in Massachusetts). Very Good. Item #C000017269
