the Shotover Papers, or, Echoes from Oxford, Vol. I no. 1 - no. 13 1874-1875

Oxford: J. Vincent. Hardcover. No date, ca. 1876. Large 8vo, blue cloth gilt, 208 pp., printed in double colums, good plus copy with light wear to spine and joints, contents clean, old ownership signature. Anonymous satirical Oxford journal of highjinks and commentary, notable for its inclusion of an early parody of Walt Whitman (p. 79-80), called 'Walt Whitman on Oxford' - which begins, 'I am Walt Whitman--who are you? Who art thou, O brother of me, art though an Englishman, Welshman, Styrian farmer, or Last of the Red Indians? Oh indescribable idiosyncracies! O mighty grandeur of ratiocination!' ...and ends, 'I am Walt Whitman. You are a fool.'. Good. Item #C000029529
