Freddie the Owl - inscribed by Mackenzie

New York: Oxford University Press, 1947. First printing. Hardcover. Square 8vo, cloth, very nice copy in slightly used jacket, a couple faint stains on last pages, inscribed 'For Don with deepest affection and best wishes, Garry, Christmas 1947.' In researching Mackenzie, we found some catty references to him by a gay memoirist named Coakley, who commented that Mackenzie was the poet James Merrill's live-in lover and that he hid penises in his drawings for children's books. We made a lacklustre attempt to find a few penises in this book, but gave up emptyhanded--although we have to say there's a hell of a lot of long stemmed mushrooms in this book, including the endpapers. Perhaps whomever purchases this will have more luck. Very Good / very good. Item #H10390
