Zikhronot / Memoirs, 3 volumes

Tel-Aviv, Palestine: B. Kohen, Hotsa'at "Yalkut" 1936. First printing. Hardcover. 3 volumes (of 4), original cloth, good set with minor wear and soil, evidence that a bookplate has been removed from each volume, otherwise good clean set, very rare. The author lived from 1859-1924 and spent almost his entire life in Moscow: he was the state rabbi for Moscow by 1893 and formed a number of Russian Zionist associations to further the cause of Russian Jews. The Bolsheviks had no use for him and after the Revolution, he barely escaped arrest after a 1920 Zionist conference in Moscow. Eventually the new government established the Evsektsiia (the Jewish Section of the Communist Party), but made Yiddish the official language instead of Hebrew, against the public objections of Maseh and others. He wrote his memoirs toward the end of his life (1924 in Moscow) but they remained unpublished until this edition from 1936. Text in Hebrew. Good. Item #H10570
