Epithalamion - one of 25 signed copies

New York: Dodd, Mead, 1895. First printing. No. 13 of 25 copies signed by George Wharton Edwards. Tall 8vo (9 inches high), full vellum, heavily gilt decorated, lettered in green, watered green silk endpapers, printed on vellum-paper, with frontispiece and title page printed in gilt, the rest of the text and illustrations in b/w. Housed in folding original slipcase with green paper onlay to front replication the cover design. Book very good, lightest soil, some light rubbing to back covers, boards prone to slight bowing, slipcase somewhat used, with top edge missing and repairs to corners, etc. Still serves to protect the book and to keep it more or less flat. Bookplate of Marie Gerard Messenger (the most we could find is that she lived in Chappaqua and that her bookplate was considered fine enough to include in the 2004 'Art of the Bookplate' compilation with a foreword by George Plimpton) and inscription ON the bookplate to Annette Berault de St. Maurice (who became a Washington DC area French teacher). A lovely American arts & crafts book, clearly influenced by the work of Walter Crane, Anning Bell and Beardsley. Very Good. Item #H10765
