Sochineniya [Works], Vol. 4: Na Kanune [On the Eve] and Otcy i Deti [Fathers and Sons]

Moscow: E. Lissner, 1880. Hardcover. Vol. 4 of his collected works, with two of Turgenev's novels, including his best known, Fathers and Sons. Large 8vo, original cloth with light rubbing and wear, neat strengthening to rear inner hinge, front inner hinge shows light wear but is still strong. This edition of his collected works, which had the author's editorial participation and contains an important foreword by him discussing his novels, is the first to include any of his critical writings or reviews; earlier collections are in 8 vols. In Russian. Rare in commerce, hardly any in institutions. "Fathers and Sons" first appeared in Russia in 1862, and we could find no institutional records of subsequently published separate editions, but we think it likely there must have been reprintings of it; and it did appear in the 1869 edition of his collected works. The novel is considered the first Russian modern work of fiction because of its psychological depths and social and political awareness and progressiveness (it is widely thought to have introduced the concept of nihilism into popular discourse). Turgenev's third novel, "On the Eve," contains elements of Turgenev's developing political and social consciousness that became more prevalent and overt in his later works. Very Good. Item #H12166
