The Man with the Hoe and other Poems - with note to the editor of the NYT Saturday Review

New York: Doubleday, McClure, 1899. First printing. Hardcover. Later state with "milkless" on p. 35. Good copy, solidly bound but with general wear. A pinned note on flyleaf, addressed to Francis Whiting Halsey, the first editor of the New York Times Saturday Review, dated February 6, 1900 from Brooklyn: "Dear Mr. Halsey: I enclose a few lines which you may print in whole or in part. I am glad of a chance to speak a word for so excellent a journal as The Times Saturday Review. I hope that it will have a circulation equal to its deserts. Very sincerely yours, Edwin Markham." We like the almost condescending tone of the note, not your ordinary cover letter submitting a manuscript -- at this point in his career, Markham felt he could write his own ticket. Good.
