Hardcover. 8vo, mauve cloth with gilt decoration on cover, good copy with fading to edges of boards, spine somewhat rubbed and mellowed, inner hinges firm, shallow loss to top of title page, light musty odor. 325 pp., a few plates. RARE, only 3 copies located by OCLC. The novel is set in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. The author (1832-ca.1901) was German-born, but emigrated at some point to Minnesota. Census reports show him in Western Pennsylvania from the 1860s-1880s. He was the author of several books that have historical content. Two of his novels had science-fiction or fantasy elements. Good.
