The Argyle Papers - one of 50 copies

Edinburgh: Thomas G. Stevenson, 1834. First printing. Hardcover. Large 8vo (9 inches tall, 23 cm), brown cloth with paper spine label, one of 50 "small paper" copies, there were also 6 large paper copies and one on vellum. Very good with light wear to spine label and minor wear along rear outer joint, minor wear and loss to spine head, light soil to boards. Contents very good, with original etched vignette on title page, 213 pp, with an introductory notice by the Scottish antiquarian and genealogist James Maidment, who compiled this work, and letters from the Marquis of Argyle and others of that house and clan from the 1640s to the early 18th century, including the correspondence of Elizabeth Duchess of Argyle on the death of her husband, and papers "Relative to the Abduction of Mrs. Wharton," and lots of poetry. Rare in commerce and in institutions, only two or three libraries seemingly have original copies. The vellum copy actually came up at Mealy's auction in 2018 and sold for over $4000. Very Good.
