Ji Dachun: Selected Works

Tokyo: Grambooks, 2007. First printing. Hardcover. Small quarto, wraparound boards, 93 pp, heavily illustrated in color, fine copy. Emerging from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in the early 1990s, Ji Dachun belongs to the generation of artists whose experimental practices altered contemporary Chinese art. A participant in the 2015 Venice Biennale, Ji combines figuration and abstraction in his paintings, drawing on traditional Chinese techniques and incorporating elements of Western culture. His early work features Spartan compositions characteristic of Chinese landscape painting, while the inclusion of cartoonish figures signal a deviation from this historical precedent. Unlike many of his peers, Ji avoids explicitly political material, preferring surreal and often ambiguous content. In more recent work, Ji draws parallels between cellular biology and landscapes, rendering trees and flora in the form of scientific drawings. Worldcat locates only 3 copies of this book in institutions. Fine. Item #H13209
