Scrapbook 1941-1943, including Miss Porter's School, outings to NYC hot spots, hockey & baseball games, dances, clubs, college football games...plus ca. 50 wartime letters between husband & wife etc.
Hardcover. 10 x 6 inches, very good condition, charting the years that Frances Robertson spent at Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT, while going to dances and events with a variety of suitors, dated 1941-1943; she graduated Miss Porter's in 1942, took a summer job in NYC and there she met Richard Rice (Dick) who was going to Princeton, and gradually the texts and mementos shift entirely to Dick, and her other suitors, Harry, George and Allison fall by the wayside. Ticket stubs from hockey games, Ivy League football games, dried orchids, matchbooks and other souvenirs from the many dance halls in NYC all enliven this narrative of a equestrian loving Long Island girl, the parties, dinners and dances she attends against the backdrop of WWII, and the choices she makes for her future life. In 1943 she married Richard Rice and assisted at the Boston Naval Hospital while her new husband was stationed at the radar training facilities in San Francisco before going off to war in the Pacific. When he came back, Rice obtained a professorship at Carnegie Tech and they lived in Fox Chapel for the next 51 years. But this scrapbook ends right before she gets engaged. Also included, but not pictured, are approximately 50 wartime letters from 1944-1945 either to Richard Rice or from him, including many exchanges between him and his wife, as well as colleagues, friends, etc., giving a picture of both home life and wartime life as Richard is off to the Radar Maintenance corps in San Francisco before seeing some time in the Pacific.
