Toronto: Copp, Clark & Co., 1881. First printing. Hardcover. 12mo (6.5 inches tall), green cloth stamped in gilt on cover, very good, light wear, ownership signature of Aleck Saunders and more faintly, of "Bro. Thos. Perrott...1884." There are also numerous annotations and amendments in ink to the By-Laws section. 56 pp. Very rare in commerce as well as in institutions. There appear to be only two holdings of this in institutions according to OCLC: the Canadian National Library, and the Library at Waterloo, Ontario. The Order of Foresters came to Canada in 1881 and this is its first published constitution and bylaws. The fraternal benefit society, which provided insurance for its members and participated in good samaritan projects within their communities, expanded from the Ancient Order of Foresters which had its roots in medieval Europe and from the Independent Order of Foresters that was specifically American and which formed in 1874 and which expanded into Canada in 1875. It is unclear to us whether the Canadian Order of Foresters was distinct from the IOF or simply a part of it; in any case, the IOF's headquarters are now in Toronto. Very Good. Item #H14506
