Devon & Malvern Camp: 1908-1918. 7 x 4.75 inches (18 x 12 cm), padded red leather, very good with some modest wear to binding. 57 leaves, many filled in on each side, collected by a school girl/young woman named "Annie." She apparently requested friends and acquaintances to come up with something clever to say, and the contributors responded as best they could with poems, quips, cartoons, and the occasional Deep Thought. From what we can tell, Annie came from Devon, in SW England, probably near Barnstaple. At some point around 1914 or 1915, possibly as part of the war effort, she relocated to Malvern, or Malvern Camp, south of Birmingham. During the Great War Malvern became a garrison town and armaments were manufactured at the Morgan Motor Works. A familiar sight were the rows of white tents on the commons, where soldiers from the Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire regiments carried out training exercises before moving to the Front. Annie apparently made acquaintance with some of the men stationed there and they have either contributed clever sayings or drawings. A fun album, with roughly half the material from 1908-1911 and the other half from 1914-1918. There are 16 drawings or paintings, only a few in pencil, mostly in ink and several with watercolors, including one of the River Taw, another of parrots, some funny comic ones, a lovely muted watercolor of two middle-aged men, etc. Very Good.
