Lettres de Respect, D'Obligation, et D'Amour [epistolary novel sometimes known as Lettres de Babet]

Paris: Theodore Girard, 1683. Hardcover. Early edition of this epistolary novel, 12mo, original dark brown calf with raised bands, gilt spine compartments, frontispiece, very good clean copy, old owner's name scratched out with brown ink on title page. After the novel, there is a selection of Boursault's poetry: satires, epigrams, odes, stanzas, etc. First published in 1666. Boursault was better known as a playwright and a satirist, although he found a place in just the society lampooned by Moliere, and in fact was himself mocked by Moliere, which resulted in a lengthy and famous literary quarrel that eventually included Boileau. The novel in a series of letters between a chevalier and a lady. Very Good. Item #H15860
