New York: for La France Industries, Ca. 1940-1944. 9 technical pencil drawings, all measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, fine condition, on thin vellum bond translucent paper, some with pencil notes such as "omit" or "VOID see later dwg;" unclear whether these were specifically designed for the showrooms and offices of La France at 119 W. 40th St. in NYC, or, given the item numbers at the top, whether these were items La France was offering for sale. All of them reflect Rohde's Mid Century Modern sensibility. In fact, it can be argued that it was Rohde whose designs and commercial savvy ushered in the age of Mid-Century Modern: he advised Herman Miller's directors on designs, etc., from 1932 to his death in 1944 and also designed furniture for several other companies including Heywood-Wakefield and the Widdicomb Company. His designs, as can be seen here, reflect the influences of Streamline Moderne and Bauhaus that later became codified by George Nelson and others. Rohde's EOG line of office furniture for Herman Miller became the gold standard for any high end office. Rohde was also the first in America to design surrealist-inspired biomorphic furniture and in doing so, never mind everything else he did, he truly deserves to be called the Father of Mid-Century Modern.
