South Africa: Schweizerverein "Alpina" 1891-1898. Hardcover. Oblong folio (16.5 x 12 inches), half leather and cloth boards, fair condition with wear to binding, cloth tape on spine, photos very good although the mounting pages are a little soiled, sometimes show light chipping to edges and general light soil, wear, darkening; all photos captioned in purple type, many dated. 56 photos total, several measuring approximately 10 x 8, a few that are 9 x 6, but mainly 4 x 5 or about the size of postcards, all original albumen photos dated between 1891 and 1898. The album details some of the business and political-military interests and social activities of the Swiss business and social club "Alpina" located in South Africa. The first several are of Aden in Yemen including of the harbor, water reservoir and dam, tunnel, camel market, then some interesting photos of Beira in Mozambique, a port town in the Sofala Province, then views of Kimberley in South Africa, the Transvaal including views of the ceremony for a railroad opening, views of Pretoria, Johannesburg, including the Swiss members of the club on guard duty, exercise, entertainments, including picnics and sporting events, two large photos of the staff of the club, including the proud bakers of Swiss confections, etc. Fair.
