Pittsburgh: Patterson & Lambdin, 1819. Hardcover. Second American edition after the Boston edition of 1815. 12mo, contemporary full dark brown leather, very good, light wear to corners, the spine slightly pitted and rubbed, contents very good, bit of tanning and foxing, owner's name (Thomas Hughes of Wheeling), 208 pp complete. A reprint of a 17th century edition in French recounting the author's adventures as a French physician on board the ship Le Force, which landed at Daman in Portuguese India in 1673 and which immediately led to trouble for Dellon. He was accused by the Inquisition there of violating a number of Catholic laws including of blasphemy and of denying the validity of baptism and was sentenced to five years in the galleys. Once he got back to France and published his narrative it caused quite a stir and was an influence on Voltaire (especially Candide). This was one of a number of anti-Catholic works published in Pittsburgh, whose residents were primarily Presbyterian Scotch-Irish sorts. Scarce in the trade, but well represented in institutions. Very Good. Item #H18084
