Milano: Editori Alfieri & Lacroix, (1917). First printing. Hardcover. First edition, (1917), large quarto (13.25 x 10 inches) original printed gray boards, 11 pp. text, 46 plates, some printed in bistre, others in blue, of Carpie's impressions of life during WWI in Italy, INSCRIBED by Carpi to a Professor Frank Ernst in 1918, probably an American attaché. Very good, light wear to binding. RARE with only 8 copies in OCLC. Laid in(folded twice) is a POSTER of a soldier by Carpi, also briefly inscribed to Frank Ernst at the bottom, printed in Milan in 1918, light wear and tanning. Also laid in are two programs for a concert at Teatro Carlo Felice (in Genoa) sponsored by the YWCA, no doubt 1918 as well. In addition, there is a hand-drawn map of Treviglio, a town just east of Milan, showing various encampments of soldiers. As the legend to this map is in Italian, it is either by Carpi or one of his compatriots. Map measures 12.5 x 13.5 inches, very good, folds. There is also a larger sheet, handwritten in pencil and pen, in English, a report giving the civil and military populations for various towns in Italy including Treviglio, the name of the Italian military officer in charge of each town, the presence of hospitals, and remarks on accommodations for soldiers. This might be the work of Frank Ernst. There are also two printed maps (13 x 11 inches) - Campo Della Guerra Fra Il Garda e Il Brenta and Fra Il Brenta E Il Piave. Finally, there is an Italian language La Guerra Illustrata, Gennaio 1918 published by the Illustrated London News. VG. Carpi (1886-1973) was a well known Italian artist, drafted into the Italian army in 1915 and serving at various fronts. In WWII, he was imprisoned by the Nazi's in the infamous Gusen camp after they learned of his partisan activities. Liberated at the end of the war, he returned to Milan. In the 1920s he was awared the prestigious Premio Principe Umberto and was commissioned to do the frescoes at San Simpliciano in Milan. Very Good. Item #H1949
