Hardcover. 12mo, 5.5 x 3.5 inches, period quarter maroon calf and marbled boards, gilt titled on spine, very good, moderate rubbing to boards, faint tidemark from old dampstain to flyleaf and frontispiece, title page with corner clipped off, probably where an owner's name was written. Engraved frontispiece, 252 pp. Told as stories involving peoples of various countries, including "The African Negro" which includes the sale of slaves,The Bramin, The Indian Widow, Ali Bey, The Chinese Mandarine, The Patriot of Tezcuco, The North American Warrior, The Russian Peasant, The Greenlanders, The Morse Hunters (a Russian subarctic tale of hunting sea-lions, etc.), The Peasant of the Alps, the British Merchant, The Convict (set in Australia), and The Faithful Spaniards. Unclear how many actual copies located in libraries, and which are "internet resources" or microfilm; we know for certain that there is a copy in the AAS library. Wakefield (1751-1832) was an English Quaker who wrote at least one feminist tract as well as several books for children on comportment and natural history. Very Good. Item #H19842
