Stories, Original and Selected in Prose and Poetry

New Haven: From Sidney's Press for I. Cooke & Co., 1813. Paperback. 16mo (4.25 x 3.125 inches), lacking original cover wraps, 46 pp., with 8 woodcut vignettes. Text good, title page lightly worn and tanned, light foxing, minor restoration to spine using tissue. According to Welch's bibliography of early American children's books to 1821, the original wraps were green and stated "Biography for Girls." It is paginated to 47 in both Welch and Shaw & Shoemaker (no. 29883), so the last poem, "To My Father" carried over to the inner rear wrap with its last seven lines (the poem was by William Drennan, a popular Irish poet of the day). The stories are of children, including Dick Dolittle, Jemmy Sobersides, siblings Carolyn and Arthur (Arthur was more favored, but Carolyn, while plain, more than made up for that with her intelligence), etc. RARE, OCLC records only 2 actual copies, Yale and AAS, the rest being microfilms or computer files. Fair. Item #H19992
