A Narrative of What Passed at Killalla, in the County of Mayo, and the Parts Adjacent, During the French Invasion in the Summer of 1798

Dublin: R. E. Mercier, et al. 1800. First printing. Hardcover. Bound in modern green cloth, contents very good, 182 pp, 4 pp. ads at rear, advertising other accounts of the Irish rebellion. The battle between the rebels and the English took place on September 23, 1798 and was the last major confrontation of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Rebels poured in to Killalla from Ballina and surrounding towns, but there were only four French officers among the rebels. The rebels staked out two areas, the first on the road between Ballina and Killalla and second in the town itself, correctly anticipating that the British would divide into two sections, but in the end, the British overran the rebels, killing many, arresting at least 75, including all the French. Stock, who was the Bishop of Killalla and Achonry, published what is still considered the best eyewitness account of the struggle, and because of its impartiality was a major block to his advancement in the church. Very Good. Item #H20024
