London: J. Everingham, 1761. First printing. Hardcover. 8vo, full period dark brown calf, very good, light rubbing and wear to binding, no spine label (no evidence there ever was one), front flyleaf possibly supplied but done so well it's hard to tell, slight worming to top inner gutter of last few pages, text very good and bright. (6), ii, 464 pp. This book is an important research point for historians of Colonial Currency, not just the original thirteen colonies, but also Canada and the many island colonies in the Caribbean that Great Britain controlled. Exchange rates point to inflation rates over the years that were not uncommon for fledgling colonies, as explained in the introductory text. Much of the book is the conversion tables to assist in currency exchange. Howes, W697. Sabin, 105606. Ownership signature of Elisha Macy on pastedown, possibly of Nantucket, 1753-1806; according to "Yesterday's Island, Today's Nantucket," Macy "was 'never capable of much hard labor, much like his father Caleb.' When young, he too was a shoemaker, probably in his father’s shop, and, also like his father, “never was very proficient. His mind was more on study and books.” He excelled in mathematics, especially arithmetic and Navigation.” He too made some short whaling voyages which were not to his liking. Since “no business suited him unless he was ... teaching others,” he started an evening school, while shoemaking during the day. Later, he gave up shoemaking altogether and established a successful day school, with “generally as many scholars as he could manage. After many years of untired devotion to this business, he found his health on the decline...including years with a troublesome cough.” Once again he changed professions, this time to “settling whaling voyages. He was the principle person in this business for many years.” (Vol. 36, 2009). Sounds like the type of guy who would make use of Wright's book. Very Good. Item #H20708
