Pittsburgh: Zadok Cramer, 1808. First American edition. Hardcover. 8vo, publisher's dark brown calf, very good, no spine label, light wear, minor scratches and scoring to boards, contents a little foxed and tanned, lovely old inscription on flyleaf: "Elizabeth Campbell her Book Purchased from Mr. Zadok Cramer Pittsburgh October the 30th 1809" and with additional inscription by her on the first blank from 1826, plus the name of perhaps its next owner, Samuel Vanhops [?]. 234 pp, 6 pp. subscribers' list, including folks in Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky. Early Pittsburgh imprint. Willison was an evangelical minister in the Church of Scotland; this book was first published in 1744. Willison's life was upended by the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 and for a few weeks he had to preach in residences rather than his church because of threats from the Highland soldiers. Very Good.
