The Old Road - dedication copy

London: Archibald Constable, 1904. First printing. Hardcover. Small quarto (11.2 x 8 inches), pictorial green cloth gilt, very good, light wear to binding, offsetting & tanning to endpapers, light age toning to contents. Inscribed to "Bluetooth Baker" -- Harold Baker's friends called him that -- Baker shares the printed dedication with Philip Kershaw. Baker was a classical scholar, MP, founding member along with Belloc, John Buchan, and a dozen or so others, of Buchan's "Horace Club," wherein they read their translations of the classics as well as their own poetry; also friends with the Asquiths and with D. H. Lawrence, Wilfrid Meynell, etc. The ancient road the three companions walked over a period of many days was between Winchester and Canterbury, 125 miles from the central southern midlands to the far east. Handsome illustrations throughout. The book laid the foundation for Belloc's later book, The Road to Rome. With laid in receipt from the venerable bookseller Houlé from 1986, for $450. Very Good.
