London: W. Jeffs, 1861. First printing. Hardcover. 8vo, early half green morocco gilt, marbled boards, very good, light wear and rubbing to binding, contents very good and bright, with tipped in letter from Jeffs on his letterhead, from 1861, about this book, which was printed for private circulation: "Dear sir, I deposited at the British Museum yesterday a copy of the book in question -- as it has been printed for private circulation and as I have a great many applications for it I submit a list of the applications and upon their sanction I deliver. I submitted your name among others and yours was the only one to whom I was to send a copy. I give it to the bearer of your note, but I should have been so glad to have had a few moments of conversation with you on the subject and if I were sure of finding you I would call [after] today..." Unclear to whom this letter was addressed. The Comte de Paris, unable to assume the French throne after the 1848 revolutions, spent part of his exile in Lebanon and Syria; this is a journal of his time in Damascus which was under Ottoman rule, and also an account of the Christians in Syria. He was also an active supporter of the Union during the American civil war. A handsome copy of a rare book, and Jeff's letter sheds light on how carefully the family distributed this book. Very Good.
