The Works of the Right Honourable Wentworth Dillon, Earl of Roscommon

Glasgow: Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1753. Hardcover. Small 8vo, 6.5 x 4 inches, period warm tan calf with raised bands, heavily gilt decorated spine compartments, dark green gilt spine label, very good clean and crisp copy, small thumbnail bookplate on pastedown (Irby, 1828), and an older armorial bookplate on verso of flyleaf, no name, possibly Haycock family. 219 pp. This book starts off with Dillon's most enduring contribution to literature, his Essay on Translated Verse. The essay contained the first definite enunciation of the principles of poetic diction, which were to be fully developed in the reign of Queen Anne. He is also known for his translations of Horace, more than for his own work. Very Good. Item #H21900
