Full title: Nouvelles Recherches Sur Les Maladies De L'Espirit Precedees De Considerations Sur Les Difficultes De L'Art De Guerir. 8vo, original plain pale rose wraps, very good, recent paper over spine with attempt to match color, contents very good and clean. 358 pp. Influenced by Philippe Pinel's doctrine of "manie sans délire" Matthey coined the term "pathomania" and defined it as "perversion de la volonté et des penchants naturels sans lésion apparente des fonctions intellectuelles" (as a reversal of the will and our natural inclinations without an obvious disruption of the intellectual functions). Matthey was the first to discern kleptomania as a particular kind of psychological illness. According to Matthey, a form of “pathomania” was “Klopémania” which later became “kleptomania” — further explored and elucidated by Charles Chrétien and Henry Marc. Rare in commerce. Very Good.
