Heads of Lectures on the Applied Arts

London: T. Williams, 1784. First printing. Hardcover. 8vo, early 20th century green cloth, very good, light wear, recent endpapers, contents very good or better. 214 pp, illustrated with 47 engraved plates in sepia or bistre, including 13 folding. Top edge gilt. Rebound in green cloth with rubbing wear to the joints and spine ends. Some tanning/chipping to the edges where plates protrude from the foredge, but most remain crisp. Chipping to the supplied flyleaf and two previous owners' signatures on the original flyleaf. Stated "End of of Vol. I" on the last page, but not indicated on the title page--this volume only. A comprehensive reference for life drawing in the style of the old masters. Taylor (the real name of the author) wrote a number of books and edited and wrote "The Artist's Repository and Drawing Magazine" in the 1780s; the text and plates were apparently unbound or remainder sheets from that serial, and were bound up in this edition and a second volume that followed in 1786. Taylor studied with Bartolozzi and was a well known artist and educator of the time. Very Good. Item #H22832
