London: Sherwood, Neely, and Jones, 1822. First printing. Hardcover. 12mo, 6.75 x 4.125 inches, in mid-20th century quarter calf and marbled boards, raised bands, gilt stamped on spine, very good, with colored frontispiece by Isaac Cruikshank after Mrs. Smart. Bookplate of noted anti-semite H. Hamilton Beamish; he was a leading British antisemitic journalist and the founder of The Britons in 1919, the first organisation set up in Britain for the express purpose of diffusing antisemitic propaganda. Convicted of libel in Britain, he was forced to flee the country and spent some years in Europe before settling in Southern Rhodesia in 1937. Hayward, the poor son of a currier, loved acting like a gentleman of fashion and all the benefits that accrued to such gentlemen. With little or no income, he established himself in London as a sought after young man, fluent in French and Italian, adept at the flute, charming company for young men and women alike. To support himself he gambled, pimped, forged signatures on checques and credit slips, until, in desperation, he took to robberies and burglaries; caught, he was eventually found guilty and executed. Very Good. Item #H23024
