Tales of My Neighborhood [or Neighbourhood], 2 volumes

Philadelphia: Carey, Lea and Blanchard, 1836. First American edition. Hardcover. 2 volumes, 8vo, cloth backed buff boards, printed paper spine labels, light general wear, rubbing and soil to bindings, but still very good, occasional foxing to contents. A collection of tales set in Ireland. One of his late books, before he decided to give up the literary life. By 1833, Griffin was of the mind that writing was a "waste of time." In 1838, Griffin burned all of his unpublished manuscripts and joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers, a Catholic religious order which has as its special aim the education of children of the poor. Writing to an old friend he said "he felt a great deal happier in the practice of this daily routine than he ever did while roving about the great city, absorbed in the modest project of rivaling Shakespeare and throwing Scott in the shade." In 1839 his labors took him to the Cork area, where he contracted typhus and died in 1840 at the age of 36. He was considered one of the most talented Irish writers of his time. Early editions of this work are rare. Very Good. Item #H23041
