The Poetical Works of Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Broughton (2 volumes, 1876, presentation copy to Lord Battersea)

London: John Murray, 1876. Hardcover. Published 1876, 2 volumes, full pebbled midnight blue morocco gilt, with bookplates of Constance Battersea, and note addressed to Cyril Flower, First Baron Battersea, tipped to flyleaf. About fine with just a touch of dullness to spine. 319 / 323 pp., frontispiece in first volume. The recipient, Lord Battersea (Cyril Flower) was a patron of the arts, friendly with the Pre-Raphaelites, and probably gay (he had strong affections for men, and his wife, Constance, alludes to 'misplaced friendships' when discussing him in her memoirs; he also featured in a gay scandal in 1902). Milnes, like Battersea, was a member of Parliament, not a bad poet (Matthew Arnold had kind words for him), and his unsurpassed collection of erotic literature is the foundation of that collection at the British Library. Like Battersea, he was a patron of the arts and an avid supporter of the poets Tennyson, Swinburne and the author Coventry Patmore. Near Fine. Item #H2506
