Jas. H. Hopkins' European Letters to the Pittsburgh Post, 1869-1870

(Pittsburgh): Self Published, Ca. 1870. First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo, plain contemporary black cloth, title page printed on yellow paper. 131 pp, preceded by dedication and errata pages. Very good, light wear to binding, owner's signature in pencil: Jos. S. Lare, with a note underneath in pen: "Joseph Sugerly Lare was my great grandfather and editor of the Pittsburgh Post." Thus, apparently the newspaper editor's own copy. James H. Hopkins was born in Washington, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and was graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College) in Washington in 1850. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and practiced in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for twenty years. He was also engaged in banking, manufacturing, and mining. For several years he served as vice president of the Pittsburgh chamber of commerce. Hopkins was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1872. He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fourth Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876. He was again elected to the Forty-eighth Congress. He served as the chairman of the United States House Committee on Labor during the Forty-eighth Congress. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1884. In this book, he travels from the States to Ireland, then to England, across to France, then to Germany (Munich, Salzburg), Prussia, Austria (Vienna, etc.), to Italy, especially Rome, then to Naples, Malta, with reflections on American artists in Rome, then back to Florence, Milan, Lake Como, returning again to Paris, Versailles, then to London, Oxford, York, Scotland, Ireland, and back home. A lively account, well written, but concentrating on street life, royalty, entertainment, churches, art, scenery, and seemingly oblivious to politics, military actions, etc. VERY RARE: we have never seen another copy, and OCLC records but a single holding, at NYPL. Very good. Item #H26091
