London: Richard Davis, 1682-1683. Hardcover. 8 x 6.25 inches, contemporary dark brown leather over boards, binding with some wear, neat cloth reinforcment at head of spine, visible strengthening to outer joints, general light wear. Contents show tanning, stains and light occasional waterstains, with several pages very dark or showing some heavy rust-colored streaks (not foxing), and the first prefatory page has ownership name clipped from top edge, which has lost some text on the other side. A jumble of a book, containing only a part of "New Experiments and Observations Touching Cold" (1683) and the whole of "An Examen of Mr. T. Hobbs his Dialogus Physicus..." (1682): the book begins with the title page for "New Experiments" and some prefatory material, including a 2 pp. "Catalogue of all the Philosophical Works Published by our Author," followed by the title page and whole text of "An Examen of Mr. T. Hobbs," pp. (8) 102 (2) pp. and then resumes starting at p. 113 with "New Experiments and Observations Touching Cold," thus, lacking about 20 pp. of prefatory text and the first 112 pp. of the book itself; from p. 113 on the book is complete: 113-324 (4), 20 (2) 29 pp. The two plates are present in digitized facsimiles done on old laid paper from the original 1665 edition -- the two plates are laid in loosely and not bound or glued in. Thus, we have, to repeat, the whole of "An Examen of Mt. T. Hobbs..." and the last 2/3 of "New Experiments and Observations Touching Cold," but interestingly, judging from the width of the original spine label, etc., this sleight-of-hand looks like it was done early on in the late 17th or early 18th century. "New Experiments" was first published in 1665; the work on Hobbes was first published in 1662. A curious old edition! Fair. Item #H26174
