Early Sanskrit leaf with illuminated miniature from Kalpa sutra, Western India early 16th century

Leaf measures 10 x 4.5 inches, matted with acetate overlay, the mat measuring 14 x 11 inches. Very good, with lovely elaborate illumination. According to the printseller's pencil notes on the inner mat, it is a leaf from a Sanskrit manuscript of the Kapa Sutra done in Western India in the early 16th century, with a text on how after Mahariva obtained perfect knowledge the gods prepared his samavasarama and from there preaches to gods, men and animals. The accuracy of this information is entirely out of our expertise, but we like the sheet and the elaborate gold, blue and red illuminated miniature and quite lovely. Very good. Item #H26331
