The Mathematical World of Walter Noll, A Scientific Biography: Noll's own copy with his early notebooks on physics, etc.
New York: Springer Verlag, 1996. First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo, matte boards, very good or better with light sunning or fading to spine and rear cover, with letter from publisher to Noll laid in. Also with 8 notebooks kept by Noll from his highschool courses in math and physics (and one on proper handwriting!), from 1938 to the early 1940s, and which might provide a glimpse into the early development of a great mind. Noll (1925-2017) contributed significantly to creating the mathematical tools of modern rational thermodynamics and mechanics, and with just as significant contributions to applied and pure mathematics. Conscripted into the German Army during World War II, he survived to study in Paris and eventually became a professor at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh in 1956. The biography tells the exciting story of his life (at least compared to most academics) and of his importance in physics and math. Very good. Item #H26375
