Large folio, 20 x 13.5 inches, contemporary half dark burgundy leather and warm brown cloth boards, very good, light wear and rubbing to binding, [2]pp. plus one engraved folding map and several single-sheet maps; 116 of 120 plates (plates 78, 79, 81 & 82 excised; a few of the plates are two-to-a-page), several tinted or colored, some sparingly so, others completely colored. This is the "atlas" or plate volume that accompanied the three volume set published in 8vo the same year. Ex-library CMU, with their withdrawn stamp on their bookplate affixed to pastedown. Neat ownership inkstamp of local architect Raymond C. Celli on front pastedown and again on title page, and that's the extent of it. Light foxing, but plates largely free of foxing. An extraordinary collection of large engraved plates relating to the antiquities of Italy, including maps, architectural and landscape views (including an aquatint of the Fiesolana Wall), and art and artifacts, including relief sculptures, painted vases, coins, and amulets. Several plates of murals are hand colored, and several otherwise uncolored plates include keys for coloring. The compiler and publisher, Giuseppe Micali (1768-1844), was an Italian historian and archaeologist. A scarce volume. Very good. Item #H26382
