The Dublin Review, Vol. III, New Series, July & October 1864

London: Burns, Lambert & Oates, 1864. Hardcover. Bound volume in half green pebbled morocco and marbled boards, very good, some scuffing to leather, bookplate of the Carnegie Free Library in Allegheny PA and pencil numbers on flyleaf, small ink note and stamp on first page of the table of contents, no other marks, pages very good, light toning. Founded as a Catholic magazine, although it was published and edited from London, Quin enlisted the support of Daniel O'Connell, whose Catholic emancipation campaign was admired by both Quin and Wiseman. The orientation was both Catholic and Irish and had both stand-alone articles as well as reviews of recently published books, oftentimes including books in other languages. This volume includes reviews of Wilson's book on the Privy Council, Venn's life of St. Francis Xavier, article on Rome and the Munich Congress, Froude's History of England, Garibaldi in England, Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua, an essay on Historical Notes of the Tractarian Movement, Godard's "Principles of '89," The Christian Schools of Alexandria, Hedwige Queen of Poland, a review of University Education for English Catholics in a letter to Cardinal Newman, review of Lady Eastlake's book on Christian art, visits to reformatory schools in Great Britain, and more. Very good. Item #H26695
