Bound volume in half green pebbled morocco and marbled boards, very good, some scuffing to leather, bookplate of the Carnegie Free Library in Allegheny PA and pencil numbers on flyleaf, no other marks, pages very good, light toning. Founded as a Catholic magazine, although it was published and edited from London, Quin enlisted the support of Daniel O'Connell, whose Catholic emancipation campaign was admired by both Quin and Wiseman. The orientation was both Catholic and Irish and had both stand-alone articles as well as reviews of recently published books, oftentimes including books in other languages. This volume includes an article on Catholicism and Culture, the relief of the poor in the early church, reviews of books on the Church of England, The Bristol Pulpit in the Days of Henry VIII, articles on Afghanistan, the Paris Exhibition of 1878, examination of Herbert Spencer's Psychology, the Evangelisation of Africa, parental authority in matters of religion, article on Free Will, consideration of Thomas Moore, Catholics and the School Board, alcohol, British India, the Encyclical of Leo XIII, etc. Very good.
