The Dublin Review, Vol. IV, New Series, January & April, 1865

London: Burns, Lambert & Oates, 1865. Hardcover. Bound volume in half green pebbled morocco and marbled boards, very good, some scuffing to leather, bookplate of the Carnegie Free Library in Allegheny PA and pencil numbers on flyleaf, small ink note and stamp on first page of the table of contents, no other marks, pages very good, light toning. Founded as a Catholic magazine, although it was published and edited from London, Quin enlisted the support of Daniel O'Connell, whose Catholic emancipation campaign was admired by both Quin and Wiseman. The orientation was both Catholic and Irish and had both stand-alone articles as well as reviews of recently published books, oftentimes including books in other languages. This volume includes reviews of books on Holy Scripture in its Catholic aspects, Rio's biography of Shakespeare, the Encyclical "Mirari Vos," several books on Mademe de Maintenon, an 1863 book on the Irish Church Establishment, the University Question for English Catholics, Theiner's book on Irish history, Consalvi's memoirs, review of an 1865 book on "The Irish Question," the Pope's latest Encyclical and Syllabus, etc. Very good.
