Philadelphia: Philip H. Nicklin; M'Carty & Davis, and others, 1818-1829. Hardcover. 13 of 17 volumes, full calf, good to very good, light general scuffing, darkening and wear, but all well bound and contents very good and clean. Most of the volumes have a thin black leather band lettered in gilt at bottoms of spines with "D. A. Reed" -- the volumes mainly belonged to David Aiken Reed (1880-1953), Pittsburgh attorney and very conservative Senator from Pennsylvania, co-author of the notoriously restrictive Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 aimed at severely curtailing immigration from southern and eastern Europe and at banning all Asians from immigrating to America. A few of the volumes have similar bands at the bottom identifying the owner as Francis S. Bennett; from what we can find, he was a defense attorney in Pittsburgh in the later part of the 19th century. Sergeant and Rawle took over the editing of PA Supreme Court cases from Horace Binney, who died in 1814; these commence with cases from the latter part of 1814 and go all the way to summer 1828. We are lacking 4 volumes: nos. 5, 12, 13 & 16. Good. Item #H27226
