Homestead, a Complete History of the Struggle of July, 1892 - the copy of M. F. Tighe, the pro-union president of Almagamated Iron, Steel and Tin Workers

Pittsburgh: 1893. First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo, publisher's pictorial dark red cloth, very good, light wear, minor discoloration to covers, contents tanning as usual, with the stamp and handwritten signature a number of times on the front endpapers. Tighe was a machinist himself, and as early as the 1880s engaged in labor organizing in the Ohio Valley, eventually rising to become International President of the Amalgamated Iron, Steel and Tin Workers. He was not a direct participant in the Homestead Strike but was quite involved in the next large-scale strike of 1919, although he and William Zinser Foster were in fundamental disagreement about some labor issues there. Tighe also took a leading role in the 1936 merger of CIO, the umbrella organization of which Almagamated was a significant part, and the AFL. Great association copy! Burgoyne was an observant journalist of the time, and this account was reprinted by the University of Pittsburgh Press as the best firsthand account of the strike. Rare in the trade. Very good.
