18 ca. 1944 original photos of American infantry exhuming bodies from a mass grave left by the Germans

All postcard sized, 5 x 3.5 inches, on Agfa film, all very good, only one identified on rear: "S/ Sgt McMahon at S-4 Warehouse Service Company, 115th Reg. 29th." Seems to be pictures of a mass grave, probably in northern France, probably of French and Belgians. The 115th Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division mainly mustered out of Maryland and their first participation overseas was part of the second wave of the Normandy Invasion at Omaha Beach in June 1944. After Normandy, they immediately moved into the Northern France Campaign on 25 July 1944, which continued until it was over on 14 September 1944. During this period the 115th Infantry Regiment was engaged in one of the war's forgotten chapters, "The Battle of Brest". The Battle for Brest was one of the fiercest battles fought during Operation Cobra, the Allied breakout of Normandy which began on 27 July 1944, during the Battle of Normandy during World War II. They also saw action in Germany. We assume this is a mass grave in the Normandy - St. Lo area, but this is not based on much knowledge or research. Upsetting photos. Very good. Item #H28338
