1857 note from the Bristol educational reformer

On a slip of paper 4.25 x 3.5 inches, both sides, dated, from what we can read, No. 30, 1857, it reads in part, "Dear Sir I enclose a copy of the Memorial -- I hope that you will induce Lord Ashley & any other influential persons you can, to meet Lord Shaftesbury &/or John Pakington at the King Council Offices at the P. h. on Friday December 4th -- Yours truly, Mary Carpenter." Mary Carpenter (3 April 1807 – 14 June 1877) was an English educational and social reformer. The daughter of a Unitarian minister, she founded a ragged school and reformatories, bringing previously unavailable educational opportunities to poor children and young offenders in Bristol. In the 1850s, Carpenter was engaged in an effort to open up a girls-only reformatory school in Birmingham and gained the support of Shaftesbury and Pakington for her cause. Very good. Item #H28697
