Lancaster: W. B. Wiley, 1861-1866. Wraps. Not a consecutive run -- there are many gaps -- but a goodly assortment. 10.5 x 7 inches, wraps, about 30 pp. each, overall good condition: the majority have their covers, but some do not, and there is soil, creasing, short tears, and one or two show signs of having been in a fire. We have 9 issues (of 12) of Vol. X (July, 1861 - June 1862), all in their original covers, September issue lacking last leaves and rear cover; 7 issues of Vol. XI (No. 1, July 1862 - No. 10, April 1863), also all in their original covers; 8 issues of Vol. XII (No. 1, July 1863 - No. 12, June 1864), nos. 10, 11 and 12 lacking their original covers; 5 issues of Vol. XIII (No. 4, October 1864 - No. 9, March 1865), all of which lack their cover wraps; 9 issues of Vol. XIV (No. 1, July 1865 - No. 12, June 1866), also all lacking cover wraps. In fact, the more we look at them, it could be that starting in the middle of Vol. XII they were issued in self-wraps and without cover wraps -- we are not certain one way or the other, and evidence for their having once had wraps is that the ones without don't have a table of contents, found on the inside front wrap of those that have them. A nice assemblage of the Civil War years of Pennsylvania education. A wealth of articles on pedagogical and disciplinary practices, surveys of normal schools, parochial schools, etc., including many in western Pennsylvania, advice on text books, the importance of schooling girls and women, a series on the "common school teacher" by James Swank, proceedings of educational conventions, physical education, exercises and training, Agassiz on the study of nature (April 1862), management and superintendent issues and philosophy, a series on "Letters to a Young Teacher," "Woman, an Essay" by Miss A. M. Iveson (Oct. 1862), the schools of Johnstown and Millville, educational statistics, penmanship, parliamentary rules, teaching German children (Sept. 1863), obituaries and eulogies of educators, etc. The October 1864 issue reports that the editor Burrowes will be taking a leave of absence to care for his severely wounded son, but we didn't notice much mention of the events of the war.
