Hardcover. 8vo, contemporary tawny polished calf, good copy, lacking spine label, joints slightly cracked, light rubbing and wear, with pp. 33-40 lacking and supplied with neatly pencilled text on vintage laid paper (4 leaves), both flyleaves supplied using appropriately older laid paper, bookplate of Sir Thomas Buchan-Hepburn, 3rd Baronet (1804-93). vii (1) 264 pp. "One of the most accurate contemporary accounts of the interior of North America as it was when England took it from France." (Streeter). Rogers acted as a scout for the 1755 expedition against Crown Point, and in 1756 became captain of an independent company of Rangers. He made dozens of raids against the French in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, going as far west as the shores of Lake Huron. He was sent to receive the capitulation of Western French posts in 1760; en route he met Pontiac, the Ottowa chief, and received his submission to English supremacy. Rogers was also present at the siege of Detroit by Pontiac 1763. Howes R-418 (b). A lightly worn copy fetched $2750 at Swann in 2017. Housed in handsome clamshell leather box.
