The Dublin Review, Vol. X: February and May, 1841

London and Dublin: C. Dolman & J. Cumming, 1841. Hardcover. 8v, half green leather and patterned boards, very good, light ex-library marks, light wear and rubbing, spine mellowed to a brown color. 548 pp, index. Ostensibly a Catholic periodical founded in 1836 by Daniel O'Connell and colleagues, it lasted until 1969, but filled with reviews and articles not necessarily Catholic in content. Early issues had a succession of editors, irregular publication dates, and a lack of subscribers -which caused financial difficulties. With Henry Bagshawe taking over as editor from October 1837 to the end of 1863, things stabilized. The journal stayed away from extreme political views. Charles William Russell was an early and frequent contributor and drafted a number of his colleagues at Maynooth to contribute articles as well. John Cardinal Newman was an early supporter and encouraged Tractarian converts to publish in the journal. These two issues, bound together (nos. 19 & 20 overall), includes reviews of tracts by the Protestant Association, of Hallam's Introduction to the Literature of Europe, the 1840 court martial of Richard Anthony Reynolds, "Sketches in Ireland," Catherine Sinclair's "Scotland and the Scotch," reviews of verses by Francis Hastings Doyle, Eliza Cook and others, review of Sabine's Narrative of an Expedition to the Polar Sea, Pugin's "Elevation of the Cathedral Church of St. Chad, Birmingham," Verity's "Changes in produced in the Nervous System by Civilisation," Forbes Winslow's "Anatomy of Suicide," Tolfrey's "The Sportsman in France and Blaine's "Encylopaedia of Rural Sports," Thomas Moore's 7-volume Poetical Works, the First Report of the Agricultural Improvement Society of Ireland, Strickland's Lives of the Queens of England, etc. Very good.
