The Dublin Review, Vol. VI: February and May, 1839

London and Dublin: C. Dolman & J. Cumming, 1839. Hardcover. 8v, half green leather and patterned boards, very good, light ex-library marks, light wear and rubbing, spine mellowed to a brown color. 560 pp, index. Ostensibly a Catholic periodical founded in 1836 by Daniel O'Connell and colleagues, it lasted until 1969, but filled with reviews and articles not necessarily Catholic in content. Early issues had a succession of editors, irregular publication dates, and a lack of subscribers -which caused financial difficulties. With Henry Bagshawe taking over as editor from October 1837 to the end of 1863, things stabilized. The journal stayed away from extreme political views. Charles William Russell was an early and frequent contributor and drafted a number of his colleagues at Maynooth to contribute articles as well. John Cardinal Newman was an early supporter and encouraged Tractarian converts to publish in the journal. These two issues, bound together (nos. 11 & 12 overall), includes reviews of Finden's Brockedon's Road Book from London to Naples and Maria Starke's Travels in Europe, two books in German by J. Gorres, Reports from the Select Committees on Foundation Schools in Ireland, 1835-36 & 1838, Reminiscences of Rome (1838), Hansard's Parliamentary Debates, 1833-1838 & Barrow's Mirror of Parliament, Weedall's The Origin, Object, and Influence of Ecclesiastical Seminaries, Second Report of the Commissioners appointed to consider and recommend a General System of Railways for Ireland and several other books on railroads, engineering and railways, 16th Report of the Inspectors General on the General State of the Prisons of Ireland (1837), German book on Pope Sylvester II and French book on Gregory VII, a Polish history of Slavonian Legislature (1832), Bowring's First and Second Report on the Commercial Relations between France and Great Britain, Dodd's Church History of England, Remains of the late Rev. Richgard H. Froude Vol. II, John Bale's Kynge Johan a Play, T. Horton James's Six Months in South Australia, Lynch's Methods to be Adopted for the Employment of the Labouring Classes of Ireland, E. C. A.'s Gerald, a Tale of Conscience, Vol. III, Fenimore Cooper's Homeward Bound and Eve Effingham, the Earle of Mount Edgecumbe's Musical Reminiscences, etc. Very good. Item #H29392
